Song of the Day: First Aid Kit channels “Emmylou”
When you drop the names of Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, June Carter and Johnny Cash in the same tune, you better be bringing home the bacon … and sure enough the Swedish sister duo First Aid Kit deliver the whole hog butchered and sheared to perfection.
I like this song quite a bit, but I have a feeling I’m going to be in a Starbucks someday and the First Aid Kit disc will be available at the counter (with a free lemon bar) and it’s going to make me want to kill myself … Yes, I hear you, dear reader. Why, you ask, am I going into a Starbucks in the first place? Have I no decency? It is a reasonable question and the answer is this: as a citizen of the greater Seattle region I’m all about buying local. Despite the inherent joy of holy self-righteousness, being a localvore is not always as glamorous as it looks. There’s a downside. And inhaling a 1250 calorie mocha frappuccino every once in a while is the kind of sacrifice I’m willing to make for the greater good of the community. It’s not always pretty, but there are a lot of Starbucks millionaires in these parts and they need to pay their mortgages too, you know. So there.
Check out the vintage footage of Gram and Emmylou. Live and shaking it at Liberty Hall in Tyler, Texas. 1973. It is a gift from the ethers.
